How to Create a Course Wiki

A Course Wiki is a collaborative wiki for your course which instructors and / or their students may edit. Each Blackboard course can only have one course-wide wiki.

1. Access your Blackboard course and check that Edit Mode is turned ON.  This can be switched by clicking ON or OFF.

2. Using the Control Panel, click on the Course Tools section, and then on Configure Campus Pack Wiki Tool.

3. Configure the following options according to your preferences:

Do you want to allow students to edit the wiki?
If you wish the students on this course to edit the Course Wiki select Yes. If only instructors will edit the wiki, set this option to No.

Do you want to allow students to permanently delete wiki pages?
Permanently delete refers to the ability to completely delete wiki pages, making it impossible to recover them. If you wish to allow students to permanently delete wiki pages select Yes, if not choose No.  It is recommended not to allow students to permanently delete wiki pages.

Do you want to allow students to export the wiki?
If you wish to allow students to export the wiki to a zip file, select this option.

Do you want to allow students to view comments on wiki pages?
If you would like students to view comments that have been added to wiki pages, select this option.

Do you want to allow students to add comments to wiki pages?
If you would like students to be able to comment on wiki pages, select this option.

4. If you wish to restrict the dates and times within which students are able to edit the Course Wiki select these options accordingly.

5. If you wish to restrict the dates and times within which students are able to view the Course Wiki select these options accordingly.

6. Select person name or person name and user name in answer to this question about how public references to your course’s students should be displayed. This means that where references to students are shown, for example "this page was last edited by XXX", depending on the value you choose.

7. In most cases you should not need to change the text direction option. If your wiki is likely to use languages which are written from right to left, such as Arabic, select this option accordingly.

8. Click on OK to finish setting these options.

9. You will receive a receipt screen, click on OK.

10. Next we will add a link in your Blackboard course’s menu to take users to the Course Wiki. To do this, click on the + button near the top left of the course menu (this will only appear if you still have Edit Mode turned ON).  From the pop up menu, click on Create Tool Link.

11. From the drop down menu, select Campus Pack Wiki Tool.  If this does not appear in your list, please consult the next slide and then return to this step.  You will also need to enter a name for the menu item, and make sure that you tick the box to make this Available to users.  Once you have done this, click on Submit.

12. In the previous slide if you could not see Campus Pack Wiki Tool in your drop down list, then you will need to undertake a simple additional step.  Click on Customisation in the Control Panel, and then click on Tool Availability.  Now click on Submit.  You should now find that you can complete the previous step in the slideshow, so go back to it if needed.

13.  You will be taken back to the main display of the course.  Your course wiki will now be listed in your course menu.  You may change the order in which the Course Wiki appears in the menu by dragging and dropping the menu item.

14. Your course wiki is now available from your Blackboard course's menu.
