Email Services
Email is a now a vital communication tool in the life of the University and the wider academic environment. The University email system processes around 1 million messages per day.
The University provides a comprehensive email service to all its members using the Microsoft Exchange 2007 infrastructure, which provides a cutting-edge and sophisticated range of collaborative tools and extended global accessibility functions (see what is Exchange? ).
From 1st September 2008 all members of the University who have subscribed to the University IT services (see Accounts & Subscribe) have University Exchange Email accounts.
These services are accessed by a range of 'clients' that your computer may use to retrieve your email account from the servers (see email clients)
Email for Undergraduate Students and Taught Postgraduates
Taught students are provided with the benefits of a Microsoft Exchange account for their email. They can access their email from the SUSSED web portal or from www.outlook.soton.ac.uk, both of which use a web interface called Outlook Web Access.
There are two versions of this internet-based email: the full version of Outlook Web Access (OWA) with full functionality can only be accessed using the Internet Explorer Web Browser or Firefox (on a Windows PC with the IE Tab plugin). In all other browsers (eg: Firefox on a Linux box, Safarai on a Mac), OWA produces a Light version, with some of the features of the full one removed.
Email for Staff and Research Postgraduates (PGRs)
The University supports Outlook and Entourage as the primary email clients for staff and PGRs. Outlook is part of Microsoft Ofice (PC) and Entourage is part of Office on the Mac. Office is available to University members free of charge for their computers from the Software Sales & Distribution pages. Other clients are described under 'other email clients'.
For those staff and PGRs who want to access their email via a Web browser (usually when you are away from the University) you can use Outlook Web Access or SUSSED.
Your email or Exchange information can also be accessed via mobile devices running Windows Mobile. Outlook and Entourage can also be set up on home computers for the University Email by using the Outlook Anywhere feature of the Email Service.
This email services section of the iSolutions website covers all aspects of email within the University, clients, user guides, frequently asked questions, general issues, mailing lists, spam etc. If you cannot find what you are looking for, please contact the ServiceLine or phone them on ext. 25656 (02380 595656).
