SUSSED FAQs – Accessibility and Benefits

Q. How can I make SUSSED more accessible?

A. To resize text effectively and enhance accessibility we recommend that you use the Firefox web browser. You can download Firefox at The Mozilla website. To change the font size in Firefox hold down the [Ctrl] key and either spin your mouse wheel or press the [+] or [-] keys.

You can also improve accessibility on Windows machines by using the “Accessibility Options”. Go to: Start – Control Panel – Accessibility Options

Q. Why should I use the SUSSED portal?

A. The portal has been developed to provide a personalised view of the web resources available to you as a member of the university. This means that according to your role you will see content tailored specifically to your interests. This tailored service will be of use to everyone in the University, but specifically fits with the University of Southampton’s goal of developing a more ‘student-centred way of learning’. The benefit of using SUSSED is that it gives you single sign-on access to many services – once you have logged in to the portal you will not need to login again to use your email, Blackboard, Adminservices, etc. so you won’t have to spend time finding and logging in to the many different resources you use everyday. You can also login to the SUSSED portal from anywhere and see exactly the same resources. As well as the default information provided for you when you first login you are able to customise your view of the portal to add other items you use frequently or to remove items you do not use. For more information read the other SUSSED pages on this website

Q. What will I find in the SUSSED portal?

A. Once logged into the portal you will have simple access to the most commonly used web resources for the university. These will be based on your user profile, so your account will include access to:

  • Your university email account
  • Your School or service web pages
  • Applications such as Blackboard, past exam papers, timetables etc.
  • News and announcements
  • Your course programme details
  • The student record system
  • Groups, for building virtual communities about academic, sports and social interests
