SUSSED FAQs – Logging in
Q. What is my username and password?
A. To login to SUSSED you need a username and password. This will be the same as your iSolutions username, assigned to all members of the University of Southampton when they subscribe. If you are unsure of your username please read this information about user accounts
If you know your username but don’t remember your password then read this information about passwords
Q. Why can’t I login?
If you don’t know your username and password then see the previous question.
If you are entering your username and password and it will not let you login, check that you are entering your password correctly. The password check is case-sensitive, make sure you enter capital letters and lower-case letters exactly as you originally set them.
If you have forgotten your password read this information about forgotten passwords.
If you login three times incorrectly SUSSED will present an error message informing you that you have been "locked out" of the portal. This is a security measure - if you realise after failing three times that you have used the wrong password please wait 15 minutes and retry.
If you are sure you are entering everything correctly but still are not able to log in then contact the ServiceLine for help.
Q. Can I login to SUSSED from outside the University?
A. Yes, you can login to the SUSSED portal from anywhere and see exactly the same resources, including any bookmarks that you have set up. You just need to go to the login page at http://sussed.soton.ac.uk
Q. I can't login because an error page tells me my browser is blocking pop-ups
A. On the error page that appears there are instructions about how to unblock them. Please read these instructions very carefully - even if you allow pop-ups in your browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape etc.) you might still have a toolbar that is blocking pop-ups. Toolbars often come from major search engine providers (Google, Yahoo!, MSN) and usually create an extra row of buttons just below the standard navigation buttons. The toolbar normally has a button warning you
a pop-up has been blocked. In this picture it is just right of centre and reads "1 blocked". Click this button once and pop-ups will be unblocked for the SUSSED site from now on. It is also important that once you have unblocked pop-ups that you do not press refresh. This will only refresh the error page. You need to re-type the SUSSED URL http://sussed.soton.ac.uk
Q. I've ublocked pop-ups on my browser and toolbar but I still see the error message, what's wrong?
Firstly, make sure you retyped the SUSSED URL and didn't press the refresh button on your browser. If you did this and still see the error it is likely that your anti-virus software is also blocking pop-ups. There are many different anti-virus packages so we suggest you open your anti-virus software and use the help feature to search for pop-ups. You should be able either to set your anti-virus software to allow all pop-ups or enter http://sussed.soton.ac.uk and https://sussed.soton.ac.uk as allowed sites.
Q. Once I'm logged in SUSSED welcomes me, but why is my name in the format "Bloggs, Prof. JT"
A. This is the format given to your 'display name' within SUSSED. Your 'display name' is used throughout the SUSSED portal so we have needed to compromise the format to provide usability and clarity. For instance in 'Groups' the member list is sorted by 'display name' so putting the surname first allows quick reference, while in the message boards it is important to be able to identify who is posting the messages, so initials and title are added to help distinguish between members. We realise that this format is very formal and that some users may not normally use their title, but we hope you can recognise our reasons for enforcing this format.
Q. Once I login to SUSSED I am often logged out very quickly (within seconds or minutes)
SUSSED has an automatic timeout: students are logged out after 30 minutes of inactivity, staff are logged out after 4 hours of inactivity. However, if you are being logged out much more quickly than this please use the following checklist to try to solve the problem.
i) Are you using BT Internet Broadband from home?
If so, BT present you with their own cusotmised version of Internet Explorer, in association with Yahoo! A setting in this browser causes SUSSED to logout. We have reported the fault to BT, but in order to avoid this problem we suggest you use another internet browser. You can download most browsers freely from the internet - the major browsers are Firefox and Internet Explorer .
ii) Add SUSSED to your "Trusted sites"
Trusted sites are located in your browser's 'options' or 'preferences' - how to add trusted sites can be found in your browser's help index. Make sure to add both http://sussed.soton.ac.uk and https://sussed.soton.ac.uk to the list.
iii) If you are not able to complete either of the steps above, or still have the problem having completed the steps then contact the ServiceLine and we will investigate further.
