Navigating around SUSSED

We hope that using the SUSSED portal has been made as simple as possible. Once you login to the portal you will be presented with a default homepage, 'Home', which includes the University Noticeboard, Contacts Search, Announcements and links to key University websites. The SUSSED portal consists of a number of 'Tabs' across the top of the screen (some of which you can customise by moving, adding to and deleting). Inside each of the tabs are a number of 'Channels' - small boxes containing applications and links. Depending on your status at the university you will see different tabs and channels. Some are available to all members of the university, some personalised to your role.

Tabs...

Tabs are the filing system for the SUSSED portal. You will notice that when you login your homepage has a label ‘Home’ on a dark blue tab at the top left of the screen. Next to this are a number of other tabs in pale blue. The dark blue tab is always your "active" tab. All of the navigation within SUSSED is done by using these tabs to get to the area you are interested in and then choosing the service that you want to use. Try clicking on the other tabs to see what appears. N.B. Try to use the tabs rather than your browser's "Back" and "Forward" buttons.

What will I find on the tabs?

Below is a summary of the information you see by default. Of course, you can add new tabs and add or delete channels, so you don't have to stick with what we give you by default. For more information see How to customise your layout.

  • Home - Announcements from the university and any groups you belong to, Contacts Search to help you find staff and students, University Noticeboard, Personal Links to key university applications, UoS Links to sports, academic schools, practising your religion and more.
  • ..Services (staff only) - Links to all the Professional Services and other 'internal' information aimed at staff.
  • ..School - Information from your home school or service.
  • ..Sample - A quick taster of what is inside SUSSED.
  • ..Resources - The Student Resources Online service gives you information on every aspect of student life. Staff can access the information from their Services tab under "Student Services".
  • ..Library - Fast access to all the library's resources.
  • ..Email - Access to your university email account.
  • ..Programme (students only) - A list of your academic courses which will sign you into Blackboard. Also single sign-on access to teaching timetables, exam timetables and past exam papers.
  • ..Faculty (teaching staff only) - A list of the academic courses on which you are registered as an instructor, which will sign you into Blackboard. Also single sign-on access to teaching timetables, exam timetables, past exam papers, Banner for Faculty, the CLT and Education Development Services.
  • My..Future (students only) - News and services to help you plan your career and the future after university.
  • ..News - RSS newsfeeds from the university and beyond. You can change your layout to add the news that you want to see. For more details see How to customise your layout.
  • ..SUSU (students only) - All the latest from the Students' Union.

 

Channels...

SUSSED contains a number of channels. A channel is the name given to each application that sits inside a window on the screen. Some of them are fully integrated within the portal (Contacts Search, etc.) but most contain links which will launch a new window and take you to a website. There are many channels which you can add that are not in your default layout - to see the kinds of channels available go to the ..Sample tab and take a look at the 'Channel Map' channel.
