Halls of Residence Network Connections – Email Access
Email access from halls of residence
Every user in the university can subscribe to an iSolutions Email account and access it from the university network through various methods. However some methods of accessing Email can be slightly different from your halls of residence connection.
The related links and information below should help you.
Students In halls
Most of the information in the related link 'Email services' is relevant to undergraduate students. However the use of the Microsoft Outlook or other clients is unavailable to students.
Students should use Outlook Web Access (www.outlook.soton.ac.uk) or SUSSED (www.sussed.soton.ac.uk) to access their University email. If students wish to setup non university based Email accounts so that they can be accessed in halls via Email clients like Outlook, then they need to use smtp.soton.ac.uk as the outgoing SMTP server. Also enable 'My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication'.
See Configuring Outlook for non–university Email accounts in halls for more details.
Postgraduates in Halls
Postgraduates can have the addition advantage of having a full Exchange account which they can then configure in Outlook, for example (see Email services in the related links ).
NOTE. The only difference in halls is that if you wish to use and Email client program on your pc in halls then in the Email SMTP Server settings you must enable 'My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication' (see related links for more details).
Also your outlook Email accounts are accessible via Outlook Web Access (see related links for more details).
