Halls of Residence Network Connections
High Speed Network Ethernet Connections
This service provides a high speed network connection to the University's data network and the Internet. Although this is primarily meant for academic use, limited recreational use is permitted and firewall restrictions apply.
A network point is available in most halls study bedrooms (see related links for a list of halls of residences) and should be active all year round. There is no extra charge for this service.
Configuring your computer
We support for configuring the following operating systems:
Windows Vista, WindowsXP, Windows98, WindowsME, Windows2000, Windows95,
and provide best efforts support for Macintosh.
Setup guides are provided in the Useful Downloads.
If you attach a device with an operating system not listed above then it will only be able to connect to the network if it supports DHCP Dynamic TCP/IP addressing.
Although your computer can automatically obtain a network IP address, it will always get the same address every time you connect.
Further advice and support can be found on the 'Halls Network Support' page (see related links).
Computer Requirements
You computer will require an operating system as listed above and a web browsing application like Internet Explorer or Firefox.
Your computer will also require an Ethernet network card or adapter. Most modern PC's come with one already installed. Some advice about obtaining an Ethernet network adapter card is also available (see related links).
You will also need a network cable with a standard RJ45 connector. These will be made available on your arrival in your Halls of Residence.
We also require you to make you computer secure and virus protected. So please refer to the Information Security related link for information on achieving this.
