Notes on international use

The cost of international is a significant increase compared with UK use particularly for data use (email and other Internet activities). You are therefore strongly advised to take out an additional data package (sometimes known as a bolt on) if you intend to use your smartphone to access email otherwise you could incur an expensive bill. Data charged at the standard rate when overseas is expensive.

You should also consider using wireless on your mobile device if a wireless hotspot is available rather than using the 3G connection.  You will still be able to receive and send email when using wireless.

If you require to use your smartphone for accessing email overseas, please contact the ServiceLine (serviceline@soton.ac.uk extn 25656 or 023 8059 5656 (externally)) to arrange for a data package to be enabled on your phone in advance of your journey.

Data packages are normally available as 1 month bundles and unused data cannot usually be carried forward to the next month.
