Public Workstation Configuration
Windows XP
iSolutions ( iSolutions. provides the Windows XP operating system (Service Pack 2) on all public workstations.
Locked Down Systems
Public workstations are locked down systems. This means that the user cannot make changes to the local disk. The consequences of this are:
• Users cannot install their own software on the workstations from disk or filestore.
• Users cannot install software from the World Wide Web, including plug-ins.
• Users cannot install drivers (software) required for some hardware (e.g. digital cameras, external disk drives etc).
All software required by users on public workstations (including hardware drivers) must be installed by iSolutions prior to use.
Software may be requested by staff in the university. Students who require software for learning purposes should request items through their tutor. Requests should be authorised by Software Authorisers within each school. Requests submitted must be clear and offered in a timely manner in order for iSolutions to install and test the requested item on public workstations.
Software Deployment
Software is deployed as either computer assigned or user published.
Computer assigned software is available at login. To start the programme, simply double click the software icon or choose the item from the Start, All Programs menu.
User published software must be installed by the user after login. Choose Start, Control Panel and then Add/Remove Programs, Add New Programs. Choose the program you require then click Add. The program will install and will be available to you for the duration of your login session.
Home Filestore
The user's home filestore is automatically mapped to My Documents after login. This enables students to access data files from a variety of locations.
