On–campus access

Photo of laptop computerConnecting your own laptop or notepad to the University network whilst on campus can be done by a number of methods. In public areas, Self-Service points are available for connection in three ways. These are normally located near the computer workstation areas and are clearly labelled:

Self-service wireless
This service allows computers equipped with wireless interfaces to connect via wireless 'hubs' in many locations on campus.

Self-service Ethernet
Ethernet connections (using data sockets) provide high-speed access, and are similar to the high-speed connections in halls of residence.

Self-service modem
Modem connections (using telephone points) provide low-speed 'dial-up' connections.
HelpPoint PCs in many areas give guidance on setting up your computer for self-service access.

Office connections

Alternatively, staff and post-graduates working in offices can connect their own PC to the provided network points. Users must register their computer with the DHCP service to create a dynamic IP address.
