Software for Students

Introduction

iSolutions purchases and maintains a software portfolio of over 300 items for about 1700 public (open access) workstations built to a standard University Desktop Environment (UDE). These items are centrally installed and categorised as either (i) computer assigned or (ii) user published.

In addition, iSolutions maintain a software download web site where bone fide members of the University may download software for use on University and/or personal non-UDE workstations.

Computer Assigned Software (CA software)

Computer Assigned software is ready-to-use at the point of UDE public workstation log-in. The item may be executed by choosing “Start”, “All Programs” and then choosing the item from the menu.

User Published Software (UP software)

User Published software is centrally available but requires local installation by the user. To do this software, click on “Start”, “Control Panel”, “Add/Remove Programs” and then “Add New Programs”. Installation is carried out by double clicking on the relevant item on the resulting list.

Software Download

iSolutions has purchased site licenses on some software items. With some of these items, there is permission to install software on non-UDE workstations of staff and students. To obtain this software, the user needs an internet connection and logon into the University network domain. From a non-University domain (e.g. a commercial internet provider), the user can log into the University network using Virtual Private Network (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/isolutions/computing/net/vpn/).

After login to the University software download web site, read carefully the terms and conditions. Follow the instructions to download software.

iSolutions assists on a “best efforts” basis with problems encountered following download.

Software Requests

iSolutions takes requests for software from any member of staff. Students who require software must request through their tutor or supervisor.

Charging for Software

Requests for software on public workstations are charged back to Schools and Departments except during the period of the “Request for Teaching Software” (normally April each year). During this period, staff are invited to request against a central fund administered by iSolutions.
