Learning & teaching week 2008: "The Strategy in Action" was a showcase for good practice in learning and teaching, with two days of centrally organised sessions and three days of local activities organised by faculties, schools and services. The programme of events can be found below along with links to presentations and other resources linked with sessions.

09:30 – 12:30Avenue Campus Building 65 Room 1097 Supporting Students with Mental Health Difficulties Sue Meads (Student Services) This half day workshop is designed for academic, professional and administrative staff who have face to face contact with students. The workshop is participative with discussion following a presentation from the tutor. This offers an understanding of the effects of mental health difficulties on students and guidance for staff in dealing with situations where students are exhibiting signs of mental ill health. Guidance includes suggestions for staff in communicating with students with mental health difficulties and an outline of fitness to study procedures. |
10:00 – 4:00 Avenue Campus Humanities HEA Subject Centres Exhibition Posters and information about the HEA Subject Centres supporting Humanities subject areas will be available all day on Monday 31st March. 12.45-1.45 Building 54, Room 5A Undergraduate Mentors in the School of Maths Rachel Ferris (FESM) & Jim Anderson (School of Maths) A local presentation (for staff development session) about the Undergraduate Mentoring Project running in the School of Mathematics in Semester 1 (from Learning and Teaching Enhancement Fund Project Award 2006-07). Evidence from the feedback evaluation for participants receiving support and undergraduate mentors involved in supporting the Maths consolidation class will be presented and discussed. The presentation will outline the benefits and challenges that the School has faced with the implementation of the scheme. Sandwiches & refreshments will be available. |

11.00 – 11.45 Highfield Campus - directions from the foyer of building 30 Sharing experiences of introducing a buddy scheme Joy Moloney (Geography) and Jean Leah (Management) This session will share the experiences and evaluations of buddy schemes for first-year students in the Schools of Management and Geography. 12.15 – 1.00 Highfield Campus - directions from the foyer of building 30 Creating the inclusive learning and teaching space Kevin Partington and Sara Henry (Student Services) This session will explore the challenges faced by students with a range of disabilities attending a seminar, with the aim of developing a fully inclusive teaching space. There will also be a practical demonstration of how disabled students can use assistive technology to convert seminar materials into an accessible format. 2.00 – 2.45 Highfield Campus - directions from the foyer of building 30 Debate: This house believes the University policy on Personal Tutoring is no longer fit for purpose This debate will start with two teams, each consisting of a Deputy Head of School (Education) and several students, arguing their case. There will then be an opportunity for questions from the audience, followed by a vote using zappers. |

3.15 – 4.45 Highfield Campus - directions from the foyer of building 30 Face-to-face feedback to students Faith Hill and Kevin Galbraith (Medicine) This session explores how feedback from tutors to students about their performance of tasks can enhance learning. This will be an interactive session involving participants in a role-play activity. |
5.30 Turner Simms Concert Hall Keynote: Beyond the Honours Degree Classification Professor Robert Burgess (Vice-Chancellor, University of Leicester ) The Burgess Report, commissioned by Universities UK and published in October 2007, recommends that the existing Honours Degree system, which summarises student achievement in a single number, should be replaced by the Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR). This will provide students with a comprehensive record of all their educational achievements and give employers more detailed information on the skills, progress and attainment of prospective employees. |

12.15 – 1.00 Highfield Campus - directions from the foyer of building 30 Learning and teaching strategies in action Mary Gobbi and Brian Webster (Nursing & Midwifery) This session will illustrate how a mixed model of quality and action research continual improvement cycles can facilitate the developmental phases necessary to realise any Strategy in Action. 2.00 – 2.45 Highfield Campus - directions from the foyer of building 30 Zappers in action Shelley Drew (LATEU) and colleagues This session will offer hands-on use of zappers, small handsets which enable students to answer questions included in PowerPoint slides and immediately see a graph summarising their responses. Schools that have been using zappers will talk about their experiences, applications and student feedback. 3.15 – 4.00 Highfield Campus - directions from the foyer of building 30 Sharing learning resources using EdShare Debra Morris (Library) and Hugh Davis (University Director of eLearning) This session will introduce the JISC-funded EdSpace project, which aims to promote a culture of sharing learning resources across the University. It will introduce EdShare, a social site which will allow staff and students to upload resources, selectively share them and add comments. 4.00 – 4.45 Highfield Campus - directions from the foyer of building 30 Easy authoring of online learning Alison Dickens and Kate Borthwick (LLAS HEA subject centre) This hands-on workshop will provide an introduction to a simple online tool that allows tutors to create digital ‘learning objects’ based on sound pedagogy. It was developed by the Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies HEA subject centre but is applicable for use in other disciplines. |

10:00 – 3:00 Highfield Campus, Student Services Student Services Drop in Session Representatives from the student services will be available for academic staff to drop in at the and gain information on the services they offer. Link to the student support websitehttp://www.soton.ac.uk/studentsupport/ Learning Differences Centre Open Day 10:00 -15:00, 45 University Road LDC are holding a drop-in open day for academic and other staff to meet and discuss issues about supporting students with dyslexia. Dyslexia tutors will be on hand to talk about their role and provide guidance to Schools on all aspects affecting students with dyslexia.

ATS staff will be on hand to talk about their role and provide guidance to Schools on all aspects of using assistive technoloyg for anyone who may need assistance to gain equal access to the curriculum. CHANGE OF SESSION (due to unforseen circumstances Dr Simon Grewal is no longer able to attend, however we have replaced this session with another Second Life Session). MUVEing worlds: Integrating Second Life, Moodle and a Microblogging Tool for use with distance learners Julie Watson and Ann Jeffrey, University of Southampton The M3 Project(MUVES, Moodle and Microblogging)is exploring the potential of an integration of three tools: the Second Life MUVE; the Moodle VLE and the Microblogging Tool,Twitter, for use with 3 different learning communities. These include a group of language teachers on a UoS masters course and a group of international students taking part in a pre-arrival online course in living and studying in the UK delivered to them in their home countries from the University of Southampton. The final group will be recruited from interested parties from Second Life and/or JISC communities. This session will outline and demonstrate the M3 project, and include an opportunity to debate the benefits and potential limitations concerning the use of Second Life. |
2.00-4.00 Highfield Campus Peer Observation Consultation Exercise Representatives from all schools will be invited to a consultation event to start the process of reviewing the existing policy and guidelines regarding Peer Observation. |
