Giving that Really Scary Large Lecture
This half-day workshop aims to provide support for any staff giving lectures to students. The workshop includes presentations from the tutor and a wide range of individual and group- based activities to consider how to handle your material, your students and yourself in the large lecture. After the session, participants should be able to:
- Review the key purposes of the lecture and its limitations
- Prepare and structure lecture material
- Grab and hold attention
- Handle nerves and disruptive behaviour
- Evaluate a range of active learning approaches which can be incorporated in a lecture including the design of interactive handouts
Level 2: for new teaching staff and those with experience in teaching wishing to review their practice.
Ideally new staff will have already attended an introductory session prior to this course e.g. ‘An Introduction to Learning and Teaching’, ‘What is Good in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education?’ or PCAP sessions.
