Workshops Offered by LATEU
One of LATEU’s roles is to provide professional development for academic staff:
- The Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PCAP) for new teaching staff;
- A central programme of events run by our external tutors;
- Lunchtime events that can be included in Faculty or School staff development programmes;
- Bespoke events organised in collaboration with Faculties or Schools.
There is no charge for attending any of our sessions. Staff can request places on our central programme using StaffBook, our online system. Full details of our programmes and a link to StaffBook can be found on the LATEU website at www.soton.ac.uk/lateu/professional_development/workshops/

To use the booking system, please go to staffbook (see button on left)
You will be asked to log in, using your normal University username and password, and then complete a short form to register onto the system. These will show a set of default responses, please select the most appropriate options for you from the options given.
You will then be taken to our list of courses. To book (and unbook) a place on a course simply TICK the end box.
Workshops are either half-day or full-day sessions led by a tutor. They usually combine presentations with group discussion and practical exercises.
- Level One workshops are aimed at new teaching staff and those with experience who wish to review their skills. Some are also suitable for postgraduate students with teaching responsibilities.
- Level Two workshops are aimed at teaching staff with some experience who are looking to develop their practice.
- Level Three workshops are aimed at staff with course leadership responsibilities or supervisors of postgraduate research students.

Nancy Copley: “I’m an Educational Consultant working with LATEU to provide the introduction to teaching courses for those new to the seminar room or lecture theatre. I also facilitate some of the PCAP sessions and the Inter-professional Learning Unit for the Faculty of Medicine.”
Kate Exley: “I run a staff development consultancy and have worked with more than 60 institutions, national bodies and projects on issues around teaching and learning, assessment and accreditation, curriculum change and supervising research students. I became an HEA National Teaching Fellow in 2008.”
Stewart Theobald: “I trained and worked as a professional actor before training as a voice coach. I formed Talking Shop Training Ltd in 1992 and currently work with fifteen Universities and various businesses in the public and private sector.”
Mike Rawlins is an independent consultant whose company, Chalybeate, specialises in team development.
Faculty Delivered Programme
LATEU will liaise with the Associate Dean (Education & Student Experience) in each Faculty to agree a programme of staff development sessions that is responsive to local priorities. In many cases we hope to deliver these sessions in collaboration with tutors from that Faculty to highlight the innovation and good practice already taking place. It is likely that LATEU sessions will be included in a wider programme of staff development events, so their date, time and location will be convenient for the participants.
The following list of one-hour lunchtime sessions indicate our standard offering, but note that we are also able to develop and run sessions on other topics if you have a specific requirement; for example longer hands-on training sessions in the use of the Turning Point zapper system.
Sessions can be followed up with individual deskside coaching or consultancy if required, and there is also a wealth of online self-study resources including video podcasts.
