Running Really Useful Small Group Sessions
This half-day workshop includes presentations from the tutor and a wide range of individual and group-based activities to explore the teaching techniques and skills needed to facilitate effective small group sessions. After the session, participants should be able to:
- Articulate their goals and learning aims of small group teaching
- Consider strategies and approaches for working with different student groups (i.e. the quiet group, the diverse group, the mixed ability group, etc.)
- Consider the variety of roles that a tutor can adopt in different learning situations
- Evaluate the appropriateness of a range of small group teaching, facilitation and management techniques to ensure learning outcomes are met
Level 2: for new teaching staff and those with experience in teaching wishing to review their practice.
Ideally new staff will have already attended an introductory session prior to this course e.g. ‘An Introduction to Learning and Teaching’, ‘What is Good in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education?’ or PCAP sessions.
