Strategic Themes

These are the six themes that underpin the University's Learning and Teaching Strategy:

Building the Infrastructure for Education

  • This is not just about the physical infrastructure - the buildings, study areas and teaching spaces - but also about the systems that support education, such as the computer network, electronic resources and online administrative tools.

Diversity and Inclusivity

  • The University strives to meet the learning needs of all students; recognising that they may reach their goals and realise their potential in different ways – and that this is true particularly for students who have an additional learning need or a disability.

Employability

  • Enhancing graduate employability is a key aim of Schools and Professional Services, and encompasses the development of students' cognitive skills, keys skills and career management skills. It also includes fostering engagement with employers through professional networks, projects and placements.

Internationalisation of the Curriculum

  • The University is committed to developing an educational experience for all its students – both UK and international - that has international aspects. There are two key strands in this endeavour: the creation of a diverse learning community, in which students can interact with a wide range of staff and peers from diverse cultures and backgrounds; and the development of a curriculum appropriate to life and work in a world with an increasingly global economy and society.

Research-Led learning

  • The use of subject-based research to inform learning and teaching, along with pedagogic research and scholarship so that students benefit from an evidence based approach to learning, teaching and assessment. It also means engaging students in research and scholarship methods and supporting them in undertaking these activities, to benefit their future working lives.

Student-Centred Learning

  • This theme is at the core of our Learning and Teaching Strategy and focuses on students' needs and aspirations, placing them at the centre of the educational process and developing them as independent scholars.
