Background
I have worked in the field of Information technology law for around 30 years. I have published a range of books including Information Technology Law (6th edition) with Oxford University Press and have recently completed the manuscript of a book on Telecommunications Law which will be published by Sweet and Maxwell in 2013. I am a general editor of the International Journal of Law and IT and a reviewer for the Computer law and Security review.
Away from Law, I love Moira, Thomas, James and Glasgow Celtic Football Club

Ian Has written a number of textbooks in the field of Information Technology and Telecommunications Law. Major works include Information technology Law which is published by Oxford University Press and whose 6th edition was published in 2011. Together with Professor David Mellor, Ian is also author of Telecommunications Law which was also published by Oxford University Press. Ian is the author of the UK volume in the Encyclopedia of Cyberlaw, published by Kluwer, is consultant editor of the Communications Law title of Halsbury's Laws of England and, together with Professor Saxby, is author of Halsbury's forthcoming title on Information technology Law. Ian is a general editor of the International Journal of Law and Information Technology and a member of the editorial board of the Computer Law and Security review.

Research Interests
Ian has been involved as a partner in a considerable number of research projects funded by national and European agencies. Many of the projects have been interdisciplinary in nature including a multi-million pound EU funded project looking at the technical and legal issues associated with introducing systems of software certification. He has also been involved in a project examining the implementation of the European Data protection Directive within the UK, Germany and Sweden. He has been asked to produce a number of reports for the European Commission and is a member of its board of expert reviewers for assessing the work of funded research projects.
