Dr John Coggon, Reader in Law and a member of Southampton Law School's Health, Ethics and Law research centre (HEAL), has delivered a talk on legal and ethical dimensions of public health in Georgetown Law, at Georgetown University in Washington DC.

The lecture 'Political Theory in Public Health Ethics' to students of public health law examined some of the philosophical and ethical controversies that are faced by analysts and practitioners working in the field. It explored the inherently political dimensions of public health ethics, with analysis of the role and effect of bringing political philosophy to discussions on public health and law and considered the place of ethics in the 'real world' context of public advocacy and public health promotion.

While in Georgetown, John also met Professor Lawrence Gostin in the O'Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law to discuss ideas surrounding the American academic's new book on Global Health Law, which will be published in March 2014.
