New Director of Southampton's Institute of Maritime Law
Mikis Tsimplis, Professor of Oceanography and Maritime Law, has been appointed the new Director of the Institute of Maritime Law (IML) at the University of Southampton.
He intends to further develop research at the Institute while continuing to run its highly successful programme of short courses around the world for professional maritime lawyers.
“IML has a worldwide reputation for excellence in maritime law; its members are at the forefront of this specialism and write the leading books for students and practitioners,” says Mikis. “We aim to build on this expertise, introducing activities such as joint research projects with partners in the US and Norway and fostering collaborations with the shipping industry. Further links will be developed within the University with colleagues at the Southampton Management School and through the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute.”
The new Director is based both at the Law School and the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton where he carries out research supported by the Natural Environment Research Council.. His own research interests include the legal issues surrounding the capture and storage of carbon dioxide beneath the seabed, a European FP7 project undertaken with PhD student Viktor Weber. He has received grants from the Lloyd’s Register Trust Fund and under the Marie Curie FP7 for research into sea level change and wave heights with assistance from Dr Xiangbo Feng, Dr Francisco Calafat, Gabriel Jorda and Adrian Martinez. Mikis first studied for a BSc in Physics in Athens and a PhD in Oceanography at Southampton before changing the focus of his work to include the human aspects of science by studying for an LLM in Maritime Law at the Southampton Law School.
