Rethinking Commercial Law

This one day conference was held at the offices of Norton Rose Fulbright LLP the conference programme was organised by Dr Ozlem Gurses with some assistance by other IML members.

On Friday 19th June the Institute of Maritime Law ran a conference on Commercial Law, the first of what is hoped to be a regular series. It attracted over 90 delegates from across the law and insurance fields and covered four themes.

  • Carriage of goods by Sea which was chaired by Professor Yvonne Baatz - University of Southampton and included sessions from Professor Nick Gaskell - University of Queensland and The Hon Sir Bernard Eder.
  • Insurance Law was chaired by Mr Patrick Foss, Norton Rose Fulbright LLP and had Professor Robert Merkin - University of Exeter, Dr Ozlem Gurses – University of Southampton and Kees van der Klugt – Lloyd’s Market Association.
  • Chaired by Professor Michael Tsimplis – University of Southampton this covered Conflict of Laws and had talks from Professor Yvonne Baatz - University of Southampton and Professor Robert Merkin.
  • Environmental Law and was chaired by Professor Nick Gaskell - University of Queensland. Presentations in this session came from Professor An Cliquet – Ghent University (Belgium) and Professor Simon Baughen – University of Swansea.
