The Institute of Maritime Law would like to formally announce the new Director, with effect at the end of this month.

Following his 3 year term as Director, Professor Mikis Tsimplis will be handing over to Professor Andrew Serdy who takes on the role of Director on 30th January.

Appointed by the University of Southampton in 2005, Andrew lectures at the School of Law in Public International Law and the International Law of the Sea and was promoted to a personal chair with effect from August 2015. He is a member of the Editorial Board of Ocean Development & International Law and a review editor for the ICES [International Council for the Exploration of the Sea] Journal of Marine Science.

Mikis said:

"I would like to thank the IML staff and all IML members for their help and support over the past 3 years. I would also like to thank the SMMI and in particular Professor Ajit Shenoi and Professor Damon Teagle for helping the integration of the IML and the Law School in the inter-disciplinary Marine and Maritime research. I am particularly happy that my friend and colleague Andrew Serdy is taking over and I am sure he will continue to lead the IML in worldwide excellence in research and professional training."

Andrew responded, "It is an honour to be entrusted with my colleagues' confidence in taking on this daunting role. I would like to pay tribute to Mikis's steady and astute leadership of the Institute through a period of considerable challenge for it, and am glad that I will be able to draw on the wise counsel of both Mikis and other former Directors who will continue to serve with distinction on our Governing Board."
