Southampton Law School students are in final of National Student Negotiation Competition
A team of students from Southampton Law School will be competing in the final of the National Student Negotiation Competition at the University of Law in London on 1 April, after advancing from the Bristol regional heat.
The heats saw teams from over 14 institutions negotiate two separate scenarios. The teams were given a short amount of time to review the case and prepare their self-analysis and discuss this with the judges. The negotiations between teams lasted 50 minutes. Our students were one of two teams from the Bristol heat that progressed to the National Final, where teams will participate in 3 new scenarios (including a three-way negotiation).
The teams will be ranked on their performance by professional lawyers, business experts and academics, as well as being scored in 8 categories including; negotiation planning, teamwork, information gathering, self-analysis and negotiation ethics.
The competition is sponsored by CEDR [live link: https://www.cedr.com/], the largest conflict management and resolution consultancy in the world, who provided all entrants with access to webinars in the skills of negotiation, to give students the opportunity to hone their skills before the start of the competition.
CEDR will also be offering a free day’s training session in negotiation for the Finalists of the competition to allow them to develop advanced skills; and further support will be offered to the winning team to prepare them for the International Competition.
Dr Melinee Kazarian, Lecturer in Law at Southampton Law School said, “I enjoyed judging the negotiations, and supporting the students through the competition. The School encourages students to do interesting and exciting things (outside the regular curriculum). We hope that students feel that we support them in all activities relevant to law (or in general classes they are taught) or professional development, and that we want to help them to undertake challenging tasks”.
The National Winners will receive the competition trophy and a cash prize and will be eligible to go forward to represent England and Wales in the International Negotiation Competition for Law Students, to be hosted in Oslo, Norway in July 2017.
