MI5, the Cold War and the British Constitution

Published: 9 March 2017

On Wednesday 1 March, Professor Keith Ewing (KCL) presented a paper as part of the Southampton Law School’s Centre for Law, Policy and Society (CLPS) seminar series on “MI5, the Cold War and the British Constitution”.

Professor Ewing spoke about the methodological issues raised by the partial release of (often heavily redacted) material relating to MI5 activity during the Cold War. He went on to present some of the key findings from the research, conducted with Joan Mahoney (Southampton Law School) and Andrew Moretta (Liverpool University). The first major publication flowing from this research will be a volume centring upon MI5 and the Rule of Law; a second volume will follow addressing Civil Liberties during the Cold War.

Previous speakers in the CLPS seminar series for 2016/17 have included Dr Thomas MacManus (QMUL) on Genocide and the Rohingya, Dr Micheál O’ Floinn (Southampton Law School) on the Concept of Idem in the European Courts and Dr Harry Annison (Southampton Law School) on Neo-liberal narratives and Criminal Justice.
