Hi, I'm Sofia Syreloglou and I studied LLM Maritime Law within Southampton Law School at the University of Southampton.

The course was very demanding and fast paced, offering a wide spectrum of knowledge.

I chose Southampton as it is one of the most reputable universities in the UK and comes highly recommended by those in the industry specialising in Maritime Law. Also, the ‘Introduction to Common Law’ module really helped ease me into the course and get me to grips with UK law as an International Student.

My course provided a gateway to the industry and I undertook two internships during my studies. I worked in the legal department for Lloyd’s Register as well as the law firm, Campbell Johnston Clark. I was involved in specific legal research projects and this gave me the opportunity to explore new legal issues I was not familiar with.

The internships helped build upon my knowledge from my course and provided insight into how maritime law operates in the commercial context. I was able to build valuable connections within the industry and grow professionally.

The LLM also contributed to my personal growth. I had to be patient, committed and resilient and I believe that advancing those personal characteristics is great for my professional performance. My professors provided direction and guidance throughout, helping me decide what I want to do in the future and how I go about getting there. Being a lawyer with no idea of maritime law before I completed the course, I now feel I am equipped to put my knowledge into practice as a Claims Handler within maritime law.
