Careers and Employability

At Southampton Law School we offer students an exceptional level of academic, personal and employability support.

This support starts in Year One, with team building and mooting opportunities. In Year Two, a range of opportunities are offered. These include Marshalling, the Employability Skills lectures, the Careers Programme and pro bono schemes, all of which help to develop vital key legal and transferable skills.

Over the course of three years, LLB students develop a comprehensive mix of technical knowledge and competencies, as well as interpersonal skills. When linked with experience derived from paid work, work experience, volunteering, caring responsibilities, sport and membership of societies, Law School students complete their studies as well-rounded graduates, highly sought after by legal and non-legal employers.

Making yourself employable

Law students must learn how to write and speak confidently, concisely and precisely. Students need to pay close attention to detail and to check and research all facts. Analysis and problem-solving abilities are also developed as part of the course.

For those who want to enter the legal profession, it is important to join one of the student Law Societies and to actively participate in their activities. These usually include guest speakers, moots and debates.

Legal work is increasingly global: at Southampton and there are several opportunities for students to take part in exchange programmes and meet incoming students from international jurisdictions.

Whilst at university, it is important to gain as much relevant experience as possible through vacation placements, mini pupillages, informal work experience or voluntary work with, for example, solicitors’ firms, chambers, law centres, Citizen’s Advice, the courts service or in-house legal departments in large organisations.
