Resource management
The Library has over 1,000,000 books and many thousands of journals (both print and electronic) in its collections across all six sites. Managing these resources requires a great deal of work - much it unseen by the users.
Periodicals
All aspects of the management of our journal subscriptions are handled by the periodicals section. This includes arranging new subscriptions, receiving issues of print journals and managing electronic journals.
Acquisitions
The acquisitions section is responsible for purchasing books, videos, compact discs and any other material, for the University Library. The Winchester School of Art and the National Oceanographic Libraries deal with acquisitions internally - acquisitions for all other sites are dealt with at the Hartley Library.
Cataloguing
Once items have been purchased, their details must be added to the catalogue and they must be given a call number - this is done in the cataloguing section.
