Library Digitisation Unit
The Library Digitisation Unit offers a scanning service primarily to the University of Southampton, specialising in the digital capture of images and text from bound and unbound materials in a conservation environment.
The Unit was launched in May 2010 and incorporates the well established BOPCRIS Digitisation Unit.
Documents suitable for digitisation
- Books, journals, magazines, ledgers
- Printed texts, drawings, maps and manuscripts
Available scanning procedures
- Hand scanning of fragile single sheet materials
- Capture of pages from bound volumes
- High volume scanning of single/double sided unbound A4 sheets
Digital Image output
- Black and white, grey and colour (1-bit, 8-bit, 24-bit colour depth)
- True resolution output 200-600 dots per inch (dpi)
- Output formats include TIFF, JPG, searchable PDF
- Abbyy is used for ocr of printed texts, including specialist fonts and foreign languages
- Standard compliant metadata
An integrated workflow is utilised to ensure high standards of quality control
