Library launches new TDNet ejournal access system
The Library has improved the way in which it lists its electronic journal holdings by offering a new service called TDNet Journal Manager. TDNet is used by several large University Libraries in the UK and is also used by the US Library of Congress.
Now that the Library subscribes to around 9,400 e-journals, the job of maintaining the links, password information and access statistics has become quite complex. The TDNet system simplifies some of the administration tasks and supplies information about each e-journal title in a user-friendly way. It allows us to illustrate the enormous depth and range of titles that we hold in the University Library to students, staff and visitors, while at the same time only allowing full-text access to bona fide users
From the view of the end-user, along with a much-improved A-Z listing of electronic journals, which includes date ranges, TDNet also offers a powerful search facility, which allows users to search across the contents pages of e-journals subscribed by the University. The advantage of this cross-search system is that the search results lead directly to full-text electronic copy. This current awareness service allows users to search for up to 18 months of current content. For the first time, users can identify journals in specific subject areas through one search interface and can even set up alerts so that they are made aware of new articles in their sphere of interest.
Further developments by the Library in 2005 will include an expansion of the TDNet Resolver system, which allows links from databases back to full text electronic journals.
Users can still find all of the library journal holdings in the WebCat catalogue and will be able to link from this route too. TDNet provides a quick route for users who are specifically looking for electronic journals.
