Changes to Level 5 of Hartley Library

The Library is refurbishing part of Level 5 of the Hartley Library to accommodate member of the Optoelectronics Research Centre displaced by the fire in the Mountbatten Building.

Mountbatten fire: Library arrangements

The Library has made a number of arrangements for users affected by the fire in the Mountbatten Building, including the suspension of overdues and recalls, and the special provision of inter-library loan and purchase of replacement material.

ACLS History E-Book Project

The Library has obtained access to over 1000 books in all fields of history selected by scholars from the American Council of Learned Societies, published from the 1820's to date, fully searchable, with 250 new books added a year.

Oxford Dictionary of National Biography

The Library has subscribed to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, an illustrated collection of more than 50,000 biographies of the people who shaped all aspects of Britain, from the fourth century BC to the year 2001.

Web of Science backfiles: 1970s

The Library now had access to the Web of Science backfiles, extending its coverage of journal literature to the 1970s.

NetLibrary access to electronic books

The Library has subscribed to 93 course reading list titles via NetLibrary, which is an internationally known platform for delivering electronic books. These 93 electronic books mainly cover the areas of medicine, health, nursing, social and biological sciences. As a result of this subscription, we also get free access to a further 3,400 publicly accessible electronic books in all subject areas.

Library launches new TDNet ejournal access system

The Library has improved the way in which it lists its electronic journal holdings by offering a new service called TDNet Journal Manager. TDNet is used by several large University Libraries in the UK and is also used by the US Library of Congress.

An update to SciFinder Scholar, the electronic version of Chemical Abstracts, has been released, and you can now download a patch to ensure you're working with the latest version.

96% coverage for academic access scheme

SCONUL Research Extra, the scheme that allows academic staff and research postgraduates to borrow from other academic libraries, has been joined by 96% of all UK Higher Education institutions - just a year after it was started.

CSA Sociological Abstracts enhanced

CSA have added abstracts to early records, plus over 1½ million cited references across the CSA social science databases. They are also in the process of digitising records in Sociological Abstracts from as far back as 1952 - this information will go live later in the year.

Free access to Institude of Physics journal archive

The University of Southampton now has free permanent access to the Institute of Physics Journal Archive (1874-1998) under an agreement announced on 24 January between the Institute of Physics and the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), on behalf of the UK education community.
