From the University Library

You said, we did

Since the Library launched our new feedback system at the beginning of November we've received quite a few comments from our users.

We're grateful to everyone who's taken the trouble to give us their thoughts and, wherever possible, we have taken action on them.

Here are a couple of the comments, and our responses - you can find even more on our feedback responses page.

Please note: comments have been anonymised and may be paraphrased for clarity and brevity.

Photocopiers at the Avenue Library

"There is a very large groundswell of opinion at the Avenue Campus that at least one photocopier should be located outside of the Library for student use."

We have been liaising with staff at the School of Humanities for this to be arranged, and the School have now sanctioned a new copier to be located very close to the Library. This new copier will be managed by the School and it's hoped it will be in operation from Summer 2006. In addition to this, the School have organised a copying service for students available every week day morning.

Both of these measures will reduce the demand on the two Library copiers making them more accessible during the busy periods.

Extended opening and service hours at the Avenue, Biomedical Sciences and National Oceanographic Libraries

We have received a great deal of feedback requesting longer opening and service hours throughout our libraries. We have been keen to respond to this demand, however there are many implications of extending hours, such as staffing and security.

This means that changes can take some time to implement - however, over the past few months we have made a number of changes:

Avenue Library

As of the next academic year (2006-7), the Avenue Library will be open on Sundays during term, from 13:00 to 17:00. Loans will be available throughout the afternoon.

Biomedical Sciences Library

From the start of Semester 2, the Biomedical Sciences Library extended its opening time to 08:30 on term-time weekdays.

Furthermore, from the beginning of the summer term, loans have been available on Sunday afternoons from 13:00 to 17:00.

National Oceanographic Library

As of the start of this academic year (2005-6), the National Oceanographic Library extended its weekend opening time by two hours to 10:00.
