Library deskside training service
This autumn the University Library is launching a new Deskside Training service for staff and research postgraduates, bringing our expertise and support direct to your office.
Initially running as a two month trial beginning in November, we aim to provide training and guidance in the use of e-journals, e-books, bibliographic databases and many of the information resources available on the web – all at a time and place convenient for you.
To book a session either use our web booking form or email our Deskside Training team: librarydeskside@southampton.ac.uk with details of what you need help with.
Why deskside?
We recognise that researchers need to access a wide range of online resources, many of which are provided by the Library – yet researchers are also extremely busy, so finding the time to get advanced training in everything that the Library has to offer can be difficult.
Our new deskside training service formalises the training that we have always offered, and gives you the opportunity to have training in a location convenient to you – whether that’s in the Library, or in your own office.
What do we cover?
- We aim to provide training on a wide range of information resources useful to researchers, such as:
- Bibliographic databases: Web of Knowledge, BHI, ASSIA, Medline, and many, many more…
- Creating effective search strategies – find out how to search quickly, but effectively
- Current awareness tools: Zetoc, RSS feeds, setting-up journal alerts, discussion lists, etc.
- ePrints and eTheses
- Bibliometrics: Journal Citation Reports, impact factors, etc.
- Bibliographic software: EndNote, Reference Manager, EndNote Web
- Searching the web effectively
- Electronic journals, JSTOR, ScienceDirect, Ebsco, etc.
How do I book a session?
Either complete our web booking form, or email us directly (librarydeskside@southampton.ac.uk) with information about what you’d like help with, and when you’d like to have that help.
