New Light on Library Services

Published: 26 September 2016

The Health Services Library's Lighting and Ceiling Project Summer 2016 is now completed.

The Health Services Library’s lights and ceiling are now providing efficient LED lights and sound absorbent tiles which will greatly improve the environment, and provide better conditions for everyone.

Obsolete and inefficient fluorescent lights in one half of the library have been replaced with LEDs mapped to the usage of different areas – e.g. lighting over the book shelves is motion-sensitive. New ceiling tiles will diffuse light throughout the library and absorb sound, providing a better working environment.

The project was funded jointly by University Hospital Southampton and the University of Southampton, since the library serves both communities at Southampton General Hospital. Project activity has been split into two phases, to synchronise with the University’s summer vacations. The second and final phase will be completed in summer 2017, when parts of the library will also be re-organised to provide additional study spaces and increase spacing between the shelves.
