About the H.F.C. Library

Hampshire Field Club & Archaeological Society

Hampshire Field Club & Archaeological Society was founded in 1885 for the study of the natural history and antiquities of the county. It is organized in five sections: archaeology, historic buildings, landscape, local history and the New Forest. Each section contributes to the programme of lectures, field meetings, exhibitions and conferences, and to reports of these activities in the Newsletter. The Hampshire Field Club has published its Proceedings (now Hampshire Studies ) since 1885 and also supports a series of monographs on selected subjects.

The Library of the Hampshire Field Club was placed on deposit at the University Library in 1964.

Content

The library includes material on the regional history of Great Britain and on the history of the Church of England. This includes publications on the cathedrals and many books on church architecture, monuments and brasses. There is also a general section on architecture and a small amount of material on natural history.

The periodicals collection has been created by exchanges with other English local history societies and so includes publications on other areas of Great Britain as well as the H.F.C.'s titles.

Extent

1,000 books and 70 periodicals, mainly 20th century publications.

Access

The Hampshire Field Club Library is shelved in the Special Collections open access area on level 4 of the Hartley Library which is on the Highfield Campus. It can be used whenever the Hartley Library is open. If you are not a member of the University, you will need to show a form of ID on arrival at the Library.

Catalogues and arrangement of stock

Hampshire Field Club books are listed in the Hartley Library card catalogue, which is on level 3, and post-1970 acquisitions are included in WebCat, the online catalogue. These are indicated by the call number prefix and location H.F.C. The WebCat Tutorial  shows the most effective ways to search the catalogue. For basic searches use the 'words or phrase' option in Quick Search. Searches can be restricted to the H.F.C. Library by selecting that location on the Advanced Searches screen.

The books are arranged by the Library of Congress classification scheme and follow the same subject arrangement as the the general library stock. Periodicals are also classified and are shelved after the book sequence.
