About the H.O.S. Library

Hampshire Ornithological Society

The Hampshire Ornithological Society was formed in 1979 with the aim of promoting the recording, study and research into the ornithology of the county and encouraging the preservation of wild birds and places of ornithological interest.

The Trust publishes its results in the annual Hampshire Bird Report and also produces a newsletter, Kingfisher.

The Hampshire Ornithological Society Library has been on deposit at the University Library since 1979.

Content

The Hampshire Ornithological Society Library includes books on the identification of birds, guides to bird-watching and handbooks on regional ornithology e.g. Handbook of the Birds of Europe, the Middle East and North Africa (1977-1994). There are also publications on the different orders and families of birds.

The periodical collection has been created by exchanges with other local ornithological societies and so contains many bird reports from other areas of Great Britain as well as the publications of the H.O.S. and general periodicals, such as Bird Study, Ibis and Birds.

Extent

180 books and 120 periodicals.

Using the H.O.S. Library

Access

The Hampshire Ornithological Society Library is shelved in the Special Collections open access area on level 4 of the Hartley Library which is on the Highfield Campus. It can be used whenever the Hartley Library  is open. If you are not a member of the University, you will need to show a form of ID on arrival at the Library.

Catalogues and arrangement of stock

All Hampshire Ornithological Society books and journals are included in WebCat, the online catalogue and are indicated by the call number prefix and location H.O.S. The WebCat Tutorial shows the most effective ways to search the catalogue. For basic searches use the 'words or phrase' option in Quick Search. Searches can be limited to H.O.S. by selecting that location on the Advanced Searches screen.

The books are arranged by the Library of Congress classification scheme. Periodicals are also classified and are shelved after the book sequence.

Borrowing books

Books can usually be borrowed for 3 weeks if you have a University ID/Library card. All loans are made at the Loans Desk on level 2.

Members of the Hampshire Ornithological Society can apply for free membership of the Library as External Borrowers.

Photocopying

The nearest photocopiers are behind the main staircase on level 4 and the charges are 5p per A4 sheet and 10p for A3. If you are not a member of the University, you will need to go to the Photocopying area on level 2 to create a 'Guest Account' and then add credit to this account by using the Money Loaders, also on level 2. The loaders take 50p and £1 coins, notes and credit/debit cards. For more information see the iSolutions guide to the University Printing and Copying Service.
