Hartley Library: study areas
Group study rooms
There are 16 study rooms: 3 on Level 1, 3 on Level 2, 6 on Level 3 and 4 on Level 5. Each room has electrical sockets, internet points, whiteboard and whiteboard pens.
Rooms 1a,1b, 1c, 2a, 2b, 2c, 3d, 3e and 3f will accommodate a maximum of six students. Rooms 3b and 3c a maximum of 10 and room 3a a maximum of 12.
There are 4 more rooms on Level 5. The two larger rooms (5019 and 5025) can hold two groups of 6 or one group of 12, the smaller room (5023) can hold one group of 6 and a further mid-sized room (5037) can hold 8.
Rooms must be booked between 9 am and 11 pm Monday to Sunday.
Rooms are for students' group study and are not to be used for meetings.
Rooms can be booked for a maximum of 3 hours per group per day.
Rooms can be booked 13 days in advance. We cannot take block bookings.
Rooms can be booked by e-mail or telephone.
Rooms cannot be booked by staff except for special circumstances.
There must be at least 2 students in a group. The rooms are not available for individual study.
Booking a study room
Bookings can be made at Reception in the Hartley Library. One member of the group must show their ID card. You will then be given a booking card confirming the booking.
Email and telephone bookings
We can accept bookings by email or phone. Email: librecep@soton.ac.uk. Telephone: 023 80 592180. You will then need to report to Reception to collect a booking card before you use the room.
Individual quiet study areas
The five levels of the Library have a large number of individual spaces for quiet study with network access points for laptop users. They do not need to be booked.
The Study Zone
Situated outside Lattes Café, near the entrance to the Library, this area offers walk-in Internet access and network access points for laptop users within a lively, social space, designed for students to learn and socialise together.
