Bibliographic databases and subject resources

Welcome to the National Oceanographic Library's ocean and earth sciences subject resources. Please email nol@noc.soton.ac.uk with any suggestions for additions to these subject resources.

Advice and information for improving your searches for information and guidance on using many of the resources below can be arranged with library staff, additionally online tutorials are also available. Please see the NOL webpage for further information on training offered.

Popular services: Web of Knowledge for references to multidisiplinary scientific literature and TDNet for access to the full text of journal articles.

Jump to resources for finding: books, chart and maps, citation reports, conference papersdatabases, datasets, journal articles, journal contents lists, patents, reports, standards, subject relevant webpagestheses.

Key information resources
Looking for? Use...
Books (also reports, conference proceedings and more).

WebCat - The University Library's catalogue [WebCat tutorial].

Ebooks - Collections of electronic books including specific titles for ocean and earth sciences.

Copac - Catalogue covering the holdings of many major UK universities as well as the British Library.

Other library catalogues for ocean and earth sciences.

Charts and maps.

Digimap is the e-resource for Ordnance Survey Data online maps and mapping data of Great Britain. Other online map resources can be found on our charts and maps webpage

Printed charts and maps are held in the library. To check what we hold use WebCat, additonal references to items added to the collection before 1985 can be found in the chart card catalogue on level 2 of the library.

Data sources and datasets. Various collections of data exist which may be useful for research. Library staff have collected a list of ocean and earch science data sources additionally some datasets are available on CD-ROM and can be found using WebCat.

Use these subject specific bibliographic/journal databases to find journal articles, conference papers and other literature on your topic.

More databases : Subject focused list of databases for Ocean and Earth sciences - Additional subject relevent databases selected from the full eresource list of the University Library.

Journal citation reports.

Journal Citation Reports (via ISI Web of Knowledge) is published annually in two editions. Only the editions and years that the University Library subscribes to appear on the home page. JCR allows you to evaluate and compare journals using citation data and indicates the most frequently cited journals in a field, the highest impact journals in a field. Citation and article counts are important indicators of how frequently current researchers are using individual journals.

Connect to the ISI Web of Knowledge Service, and select JCR from the 'Select a Database' page.

Search WebCat to see what is held by the library. If you have problems locating a report try searching by the name of the organisation responsible.

NOC, SOC and some IOS/IOSDL reports are available on ePrints Soton

An inventory of UK research cruise reports is maintained by BODC and it contains links to an online full text version of the report where it is available.

Many are reports are now freely available on the Internet try the websites of other research organisations in oceanography and earth science to see what is available.

Theses

Use WebCat to search for the theses and dissertations held in the library.

Electronic copies of SOES PhD theses have been added to ePrints Soton from 2004 with a 3 year embargo before the full text is made available.
