Who can use this service?

This service provides students who may live or work at a distance from the University, or who may find it difficult to visit in person, with access to the University of Southampton (UoS) Library stock via the post.  The service operates within the UK.

What can I borrow?

You can borrow items which are held at one of the University of Southampton libraries and are available on either 3 week or 1 week loan.  Please note this service does not apply to inter-library loan (ILL) items as these are not our own stock. Your borrowing limit applies as for items issued to you in the usual way.

How do I request a postal loan?

  • Check the Library catalogue, WebCat, for details and availability of items.
  • Email your details and the details of the item you require to: loanhart@soton.ac.uk
  • Telephone the Loans Desk with all details.  Tel: 023 8059 3452

We aim to despatch postal loans and photocopies, normally within 2 working days of receiving your request.  Please note, we will only post items within the UK.

How long can I keep an item?

You can keep the items for their usual loan period, subject to recall (typically 7 days in which to finish using the item and return).  A return date will be stamped inside each item you receive.

How do I return an item?

Items can be returned by post - we recommend you use recorded delivery.  Alternatively, you can return items to the Library in the usual way.

Can I renew an item?

Yes, unless it has been requested by another user.  You can either renew your items online using WebCat or by phoning the Loans Desk on 023 8059 3452.

What happens if I do not return an item on time?

The usual rules apply.  You will be barred from borrowing until all overdue items have been returned or renewed.

What will it cost me?

There is no charge for the service and the cost of posting items to you will be met by the Library.  However, if you return items to us by post you will be responsible for the postage and packing costs.
