Stephen is Deputy Head of School. He has published extensively on the development of effective risk management processes, particularly for project management. He is a Fellow of the UK Institute of Risk Management. He was a member of the British Standards Risk Committee that developed the new UK standard on Risk Management. Prior to joining the University in 1980, Stephen worked in Operational Research with NatWest Bank.

Current work is concerned with the management of operating risk in infrastructure projects.

Operational risk is associated with uncertainty about the performance of infrastructure once it has been constructed, during the long-lived operating phase of infrastructure projects.
