Insights into the actuarial profession for Southampton students

Published: 9 December 2013

Students of Actuarial Science joined professionals from the region to hear a thought provoking discussion on the role of actuaries in complex health systems in the 2013 University of Southampton lecture sponsored by the Worshipful Company of Actuaries.

Joanne Buckle, Principal and Consulting Actuary at the leading London firm Milliman, spoke about how actuaries can contribute to the decision making process of health systems. She has more than 15 years of experience in this area including work on efficiency benchmarking and health insurance pricing as part of major consulting projects in the public and private sector.

"We value our links with the Worshipful Company of Actuaries," says Dr Erengul Dodd, Lecturer in Actuarial Mathematics. "These lectures are highlights of the academic year. They cover important current issues and recent developments in the profession and give our students real insights into actuarial careers."

The annual lectures are delivered by senior actuaries in a range of fields and are followed by a reception, giving valuable networking opportunities for undergraduates and postgraduates to meet local actuaries. More than 150 people attend each year. Practising actuaries are always keen to discuss their profession with the students and pass on careers advice. The first of this lecture series was held at Southampton in 2009.

The Worshipful Company of Actuaries is a Livery Company of the City of London established in 1979. It supports and promotes the profession and its members around the world. Through its Charitable Trust, the Company backs several projects and, in particular, works to promote mathematics education.
