Statistical modelling specialist returns to the University of Southampton

Published: 16 December 2013

Jonathan Forster, Professor of Statistics, has returned to the University of Southampton after a year at Lloyds Bank in the City of London.

At the bank, he worked on methods of improving its statistical modelling and developed an interest in credit risk research, where financial institutions decide whether customers are likely to default on loans. In particular he looked at ways of modelling the impact of payment protection insurance (PPI) compensation on the company.

“It was an interesting experience to see how statistical modelling is used in practice,” he says. “There is potential for major financial institutions to introduce more contemporary and rigorous systems to help them tackle future challenges.”

Jon joined the University of Southampton in 1994 and became a Professor ten years later. Formerly Deputy Director of the Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute (S3RI), he has contributed his expertise to other University disciplines including the Centre for Population Change and the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research and advised actuarial science researchers examining longevity. Following his year with Lloyds, he plans to develop his work on credit risk modelling.

He is joint author of a volume of Kendall's Advanced Theory of Statistics and was awarded the Royal Statistical Society's Guy Medal in Bronze in 1999 for his work on Computational Statistics and Bayesian Inference.
