National recognition for Southampton student

Published: 30 September 2014

A University of Southampton Mathematics Operational Research graduate is celebrating after being recognised for the quality of his MSc student dissertation in a national competition.

Adam Booker has been named as a runner-up in the Operational Research (OR) Society’s May Hicks Award that recognises the best industry-based student projects in operational research.

Adam was selected for the £200 runner-up award for his three-month project working with National Express developing an analytical system to evaluate some of its routes and come up with improvements.

Steve Plimmer, Head of Proposition Research and Development at National Express (Coach), welcomed the announcement. He said: “Adam is highly talented and hard-working and made a very valued contribution over the course of his project.

“It’s fantastic news to hear that he’s been recognised – he thoroughly deserves this award.”

The May Hicks awards are presented annually by the OR Society from a generous bequest from the estate of Mrs May Hicks, wife of Donald Hicks OBE, a major contributor to operational research and the first treasurer of the OR Society.

The award is the second that Adam has received for his project. He was presented with a Boeing prize at a special University ceremony earlier this year.

Adam was one of nine talented postgraduate students in Mathematics and Management who were recognised for their industry-based projects at the award ceremony sponsored by Boeing.

Adam said: “This is a really appreciated post-script to my time at the University. I'd like to thank my supervisor, the teaching staff of the Operational Research programme, and the industrial liaison group for making these projects happen.

"The masters degree at Southampton has been excellent value and opened up a great range of possible career paths."

Since graduating Adam has started working as an Operational Research Analyst in the Ministry of Justice.
