On 1 September it will be 35 years since Professor Tim Sluckin arrived in Southampton. To mark the occasion, a group of colleagues from Mathematical Sciences are sponsoring a conference entitled 'Liquid Crystals, Life and Languages, and other mathematical interdisciplinary studies: Tim Sluckin at 65' to which some of Tim’s colleagues over the years (both new and old) will be coming from far and wide to attend.

The conference will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week in Building 56, starting about lunchtime on Tuesday August 30, and ending mid-afternoon Wednesday August 31.

To indicate the breadth of Tim’s academic interests, Tuesday’s programme will be devoted to theoretical physics (in particular soft condensed matter and liquid crystals, the focus of much of Tim’s work over his career). Wednesday’s programme will be more eclectic, including a talk from Jon Forster on Bayesian inference, as well as talks on linguistics, a talk on mathematical biology by Ben MacArthur, one on economics by Richard Werner from the Business School, as well a couple of talks on biological anthropology.

A detailed programme for both days of the conference can be accessed here.

Colleagues in Mathematical Sciences and across the University are invited to attend the sessions as well as talk to some of the more long-in-the tooth speakers who remember Tim as a young man. Please email N.Podoliak@soton.ac.uk to register.
