Hi, I'm Sarah Stevens and I studied MSc Statistics with Applications in Medicine within Mathematical Sciences at the University of Southampton.

I chose Southampton because it is a world-leading institution and lecturers on the course are experts in their field.

I am a Statistical/ Epidemiological Modeller in the Department for Primary Care Health Sciences, Oxford University. My role is to provide statistical and analytical support to researchers within the department including analysis of clinical study data and GP patient records data linked to national databases. I also provide advice and support on study design e.g. analysis methods and sample size calculations.

I would not have been able to apply for my current position without the MSc and I use nearly all of the skills gained as part of my degree in my day-to-day work. This includes statistical modelling techniques, study design and sample size calculations, statistical tests as well as academic writing, presentation and consultancy skills.

I really enjoyed my time at Southampton, the course was engaging and I made some excellent friends thanks to being in a relatively small, close-knit group of students.

I am planning now to study for a PhD in my Department, investigating ways to improve cardiovascular risk prediction in primary care and hope to become a senior statistician on completion of the PhD.

My advice to current students; Get as much experience as you can, as early as possible in your field of interest (even if it is unpaid!). If this is not possible, maintain interest and remain up-to-date on the research that is happening in your field. Subscribe to one or two relevant journals and join relevant professional societies.
