Why Mathematics at Southampton?

The University of Southampton is a university committed to research at the highest international level, both in quality and volume.  It's consistently ranked within the top half-dozen universities in the UK for research income in engineering and physical sciences.  Mathematics at Southampton has around 50 permanent staff, allowing us to offer a portfolio of postgraduate study that spans Applied MathematicsOperational ResearchPure Mathematics and Statistics

Outstanding research

Our research is of exceptional quality. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), 100 per cent of research in Mathematical Sciences was ranked world-leading or internationally excellent for its impact.

A leader in research income

Mathematics is also ranked in the top half-dozen UK Mathematics programmes for research income by the official UK Higher Education Statistics Agency.

Several research institutes are attached to the School, these include the Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute and the Centre for Operational Research Research, Management and Information Systems, which in 2007 won a multi-million share in a £12 million Science and Innovation Grant.  We are also home to the largest General Relativity groups in Europe, currently in receipt of a £1.9 million rolling grant.

An interdisciplinary approach

In addition to our mathematical investigations our broad interests allow us to undertake, and offer graduate study in, interdisciplinary research.  We have active collaborators in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, optoelectronics, acoustics, engineering, social sciences and management schools around the world.

The course provided me with a lot of opportunities and gave me examples to demonstrate each of the tick boxes alongside job applications including team working and independent thinking which made it a really useful degree in that aspect as well.
