Research

From the interaction of numerical analysis and differential geometry in black hole dynamics, to the role of simulation and optimisation in public health planning, the broad range of mathematical sciences studied at Southampton gives us a unique ability to contribute to the scientific, engineering and social challenges facing society.

Our research expertise includes mathematical physics, biology, geometry, group theory, experimental design and stochastic optimisation. Southampton research students are active across all these fields at doctoral level. We can offer expert supervision for student research at MSc and PhD level in a broad range of subjects.

Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics

Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at Southampton carries out internationally leading research in a wide range of areas in theoretical physics and mathematical modelling. Our expertise includes string theory and holography (black holes, cosmology, non-equilibrium phenomena, CFT, non-perturbative methods), relativistic astrophysics (gravitational waves, relativistic fluids, the dynamics of black holes and neutron stars) and mathematical modelling (mathematical biology, medicine, engineering and physics).

Operational Research

Our main research areas are computational optimisation, stochastic simulation, game theory, and stochastic optimisation. Together with Statistics, we are ranked 37th in the world in the 2020 QS World University Rankings, and 8th in the UK. Our work has had considerable impact in industries ranging from aerospace, Formula 1 racing, robust supply chain management, manufacturing, and revenue management. 100% of our research was deemed to be world leading or internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance, and rigour in the last Research Assessment Exercise.

Pure Mathematics

The Pure Mathematics Group has internationally leading teams in geometric group theory, noncommutative geometry, algebraic topology and applied topology. We are very keen on building bridges between these areas and interacting with other mathematicians, scientists and engineers to find new ways to exploit sophisticated mathematical ideas.

Statistics

The Statistics Group carries out internationally leading research in the theory, methodology and applications of the design and analysis of experiments, statistical modelling and biostatistics. As part of the Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute (S3RI), we play a leading role in one of the largest groups of statisticians in the UK and interact with a wide range of academic, industrial and government partners.
