In October 2005 the University’s Highfield Campus was the scene of a serious fire which destroyed the Mountbatten Clean Room Complex, a major facility for the research activities of the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) and the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC).
However, undergraduate teaching facilities were not affected and there was no impact on teaching in ECS. Applications via UCAS for courses in Electrical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, and Information Technology in Organisations will be processed as usual. All ECS undergraduate teaching takes place in a separate building, and the School’s extensive undergraduate computing and electronics labs were not damaged in the fire.
Completion of the new building which will replace the Mountbatten Clean Room Suite is anticipated for summer 2008. This will provide a truly world-class facility which will further enhance the research capability of ECS and ORC.
