Professor Faith Hill is in Medical Education and was a senior member of the education team in the Faculty of Medicine. For many years she led on staff development and contributed to a wide area of policy and practice relating to the BM Programmes. In her role as Emeritus Professor, Faith Hill is now available to support education within the Faculty and wider University. She is also available for consultancy nationally and internationally.

Professor Hill developed a highly innovative programme of staff development in teaching, learning and assessment for clinicians and academics throughout the Faculty and across a wide range of NHS Trusts within the Region. She is particularly known for her interactive, participatory approach to facilitation and training. In 2009 she was awarded a prestigious National Teaching Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy for her work in staff development. This was quickly followed by a major HEA grant to investigate the transition of students from classroom to clinical practice.

From 2003 to 2014 Professor Hill was Head of Medical Education and Director of the Medical Education Development Unit in the Faculty of Medicine. The School grew from a small handful of people to over 50 academic staff under her leadership. Members of the School are responsible for leadership, development and delivery of undergraduate programmes within the Faculty and for the development of medical education research and enterprise.

Professor Hill began her University career as a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Education at Southampton. In 1990, she was appointed Lecturer and Course Director for Health Education and Health Promotion at King’s College, University of London. In 2000 she became Academic Director of the national Learning and Teaching Support Network Centre for Health Sciences and Practice, before returning to Southampton University as a Senior Lecturer in 2001. Research interests

Professor Faith Hill has undertaken a wide range of pedagogic research and has contributed to the evidence base of education for over 25 years. She has managed a range of successful education projects and has written over 50 papers, including publications in peer-reviewed journals, professional publications and contributions to edited works. In 2007 she received a Highly Commended Award for excellence in publishing from the Emerald Literati Network.

Professor Hill led on education research within the Faculty and established a regular and well-attended education research forum and chaired the Education Research Advisory Group. Her pedagogic research at Southampton included managing a team of statisticians and qualitative researchers in a series of rigorous evaluations (one in collaboration with Sheffield University), critically reviewing the introduction of a new assessment tool – the mini-CEX. This research is of considerable national and international interest and was presented at major conferences and published in leading journals.

Most recently, Professor Hill has been involved in a number of projects exploring the educational implications of the ‘demise of the firm’ and the changing nature of ‘apprenticeship’ within the NHS - two areas of major impact on healthcare students. Following her National Teaching Fellow award from the HEA in 2009, she was successful in a bid as Lead Applicant and PI on a national project awarded £200,000 by HEFCE/ HEA. This was an interdisciplinary study, collaborating with medicine, nursing and audiology, across the Universities of Southampton and Leeds. The results have been widely disseminated nationally and internationally and have strongly influenced the development of the medical curriculum at Southampton.
