Professor Nicholas Clarke is Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon within Medicine at the University of Southampton.

Having been an orthopaedic consultant for over 20 years and specializing in paediatric orthopaedics, this has become the primary clinical and research focus. A co-founder of the International Hip Dysplasia Institute, member of council of the British Orthopaedic Association, member of several influential working groups, such as the National Coding Definitions and HRG Working Group and widely published in leading peer reviewed international journals. Giving lectures to an international audience by invitation including key note lectures at major conferences worldwide. Involved with both undergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching, as well as research and development within the University and the Trust.

Research interests

Current research interests include Vitamin D deficiency in children; developmental hip dysplasia and prophylactic hip positioning for stable hips following breech birth, being conducted via the International Hip Dysplasia Institute (www.hipdysplasia.org), being one of the founder members.

In collaboration with Great Ormond Street Hospital, a study into Genome-wide association study of developmental dysplasia of the hip in children and adolescents.

Additionally, in collaboration with the University of California San Francisco, a study into the molecular genetic analysis of limb malformations.

A board member of the recently formed International Perthes’ Study Group, based in Texas, and currently involved in multiple research projects relating to Legg Calvé Perthes’ disease (LCPD).

Over 100 papers published in leading peer reviewed academic journals on all aspects of paediatric orthopaedics.
