New Associate Director of the NIHR Southampton Respiratory Biomedical Research Unit

Published: 18 December 2015
Professor Donna Davies

Professor Donna Davies has been appointed as Associate Director of the NIHR Southampton Respiratory Biomedical Research Unit (BRU).

The objectives of this post are to further strengthen the science base in the Respiratory BRU which has been critical for two successful applications for NIHR funding of our unit.

Professor Davies has been an exemplary champion of collaboration between basic and clinician scientists and an inspirational teacher and mentor to many in both camps. Her own research has been at the very cutting edge, underpinned by an impressive string of research grants from the MRC, BBSRC, NC3Rs, Innovate UK, TSB, British Lung Foundation and Asthma UK, as well as major industrial collaborations. Her research has led to high impact papers, several patents and the creation of our Faculty’s successful spin-put company, Synairgen.

This appointment signals a step-change in our ambition to ensure excellence in basic science through growth of our scientist teams and close collaboration between clinicians and basic scientists. It recognises our view that basic science is at the very source of discovery of mechanisms and therapeutic interventions.
