Professor John Primrose, Professor of Surgery in the Faculty of Medicine and Professor Edmund Sonuga-Barke, Professor in Psychology, Developmental Psychopathology are among 47 world-leading researchers who have been elected to the prestigious Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences.

They have been elected for their contribution to medical research and healthcare, the generation of new knowledge in medical sciences and its translation into benefits to society.

Professor Primrose’s research is in clinical and translational aspects of gastrointestinal cancer. The focus is on improving outcomes for patients undergoing surgical treatment for cancer. This is being achieved through devising and undertaking large scale national and international trials. All the studies are associated with tissue collections with a view to the development of biomarkers which will have prognostic value and may also predict response to therapy.

Professor Sonuga-Baker’s current and recent research is on childhood psychiatric disorders with a special focus on ADHD and related disorders. It is aimed at answering fundamental questions concerning the causes of these conditions and translating knowledge gained through basic research to develop more effective ways to manage disorder for the benefit of patients and their families.

Professor Primrose and Professor Sonuga-Barke will be formally admitted to the Academy on 29 June 2016.
